Chapter Nineteen
Ellie glanced up in surprise as her bedroom door swung open. Susanna entered still wearing her nightgown and robe. Ellie swiveled on the padded bench she sat on to face her friend. âFeeling any better?â
Susanna shut the door behind her. âNo, still miserable. Bloody bad idea. But I absolutely cannot stay in bed a moment longer, or I will go crazy. So, I thought I would come down to get all of the details from your night out.â She curled up in a wingback chair that sat next to a sunny window.
Ellie couldnât stop the smile from spreading across her face. âIt was so much fun. Where should I start? We traveled with the Duke of Hartwick and his ward Miss Lucy Middleton in his carriage.â
âThe Duke of Hartwick? Ooh, he is very dark and brooding? Iâm jealous!â
âHeâs actually quite charming. We had a supper box, and Lucius organized champagne for us to drink. Itâs number three on my list, drink too much champagne.â
âEleanor Spencer, I didnât know you had scandalous things on that list. I thought it was things like go to the London Museum of Art or eat ice cream at Guntherâs.â
Ellie crossed her arms in front of her chest. âAm I so proper and good that I canât have fun?â
âOf course you have fun, dear. Just you know, wholesome fun.â
Humpf! âI have plenty of wicked thoughts.â
Susanna raised an eyebrow. âReally? Tell me one.â
Ellie had laid in bed this morning thinking about Luciusâs wicked mouth and his lean hard body. She had always admired how handsome he was but being in his arms with his tongue tangling with hers had lit something inside her, low in her belly. This new feeling made her hot and tingly. After some consideration, she had decided it could only be lust. For even though they had been fully dressed and in public, last night, she had wished they were alone so she could undo his cravat and the buttons on his shirt and delve her hands beneath to feel the hot skin across his broad chest.
Ellieâs temper grew. She could have wicked thoughts. She was a vicarâs daughter, not a nun. And before she could stop it, sheâd blurted the truth to her friend. âIâve kissed Lucius Grisham. Twice.â
Susannaâs mouth fell open. âYou have? When?â
It felt good to confess it to Susanna. She had held her secret tendre close too long. âThe first time was at Henryâs funeral, in the graveyard. And the second time was last night.â
âLucius kissed you at Henryâs funeral?!â
âNo, I kissed him. He was quite taken by surprise. It was selfish of me, but I was feeling so despondent that I had never done anything, never taken any chances. And thinking how short life can be, snatched away in a moment of bad luck or bad weather. Then Lucius was there, wondering what I was doing out in the cold. And I just seized the moment and kissed him.â She shrugged.
Susanna grinned. âBravo!â
Ellie stared at her friend. This was not the response she had expected.
